What is Turkey Tail?
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), also known as Yun Zhi, Kawaratake, and Coriolus versicolor, is a type of polypore mushroom that grows on dead logs worldwide. Its unique appearance, resembling a turkey's tail, has made it easily recognizable and widely used in traditional medicine for centuries.
Turkey Tail has a rich history of use in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is known as Yun Zhi and has been used to support the immune system and overall well-being. In Japan, it is called Kawaratake and has been used to enhance immune function and promote longevity. In Korean medicine, it is known as Sang-Hwang and has been employed to treat various health conditions, including inflammation and infections.
What does research say so far?
Turkey Tail is known for its immune-boosting properties, primarily due to the presence of two essential polysaccharides, polysaccharopeptide (PSP) and polysaccharide-K (PSK). These bioactive compounds have been shown to have immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that Turkey Tail extract can improve immune function by stimulating the production of immune cells, such as natural killer cells, T cells, and macrophages. Additionally, research has shown that Turkey Tail can help support the body's natural defenses during cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Aside from its immune-enhancing properties, Turkey Tail has also been studied for its potential effects on gut health. It contains prebiotics that can help support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, promoting a healthy microbiome and aiding digestion.
Immune System Support
Turkey Tail extract is renowned for its ability to enhance immune system function. Its immunomodulatory properties are attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds called polysaccharopeptide (PSP) and polysaccharide-K (PSK) (1). These compounds support the immune system by increasing the activity of certain white blood cells and stimulating the production of cytokines (2).
Turkey Tail extract is packed with powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals (3). These antioxidants, including phenols and flavonoids, play a crucial role in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic diseases (4).
Gut Health Enhancement
Research suggests that Turkey Tail extract can promote gut health by maintaining a healthy balance of gut bacteria. It contains prebiotic compounds that support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, leading to improved digestive health and overall well-being (5).
Turkey Tail extract demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate inflammation in the body. Studies have shown that its bioactive compounds can modulate inflammatory pathways and decrease the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (6).
Liver Health Support
Turkey Tail extract has been found to protect the liver from damage caused by toxins and oxidative stress. Research suggests that it can help maintain liver function by reducing inflammation, promoting antioxidant activity, and preventing fibrosis (7)
Boosts Athletic Performance
Supplementation with a mushroom blend containing turkey tail extract improved endurance performance and reduced fatigue in mice. This research supports the potential for turkey tail to help athletes perform at their best and recover more effectively after intense workouts.
In addition to improved endurance, turkey tail's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce muscle damage and inflammation during exercise, leading to faster recovery and better performance.

How is our extract different?
Why strive for change? As a mushroom farmer for a number of years, and having a previous background in health, fitness and supplements, I wanted to fully incorporate the greatness mushrooms have to offer. I began by researching the best practices, which initially led to creating a Lion's Mane dual-extract, a market standard. But from watching the extraction process and mixing the water and alcohol, I noticed something was off and started to ask a lot of questions. The rich color from the separate extractions vanished when mixed. This was due to the alcohol knocking polysaccharides out of solution. I was also receiving feedback from my customers at my farmers markets reporting the Lion's Mane Tincture was hard to take regularly due to the harsh flavor from the alcohol.
From there I sought for how to extract fat-soluble or non-polar compounds without solvents or alcohol, Ultra-sound Assisted Extraction was the solution. This has led to a noticeable significant development in effectiveness of not only the process of extraction, but the delivery of compounds into circulation. This in turn lead to the adoption of Liposomal Delivery, a modern method of micro encapsulation, that allows the compounds to pass through digestion successfully and be absorbed at a higher rate. Common Powders, Pills and non-encapsulated Functional Mushroom supplements can have a 15% absorption rate, Liposomal Delivery can increase this by orders of magnitude.
In an effort to create a more "full-spectrum" extract, meaning it contains more of what you would find in the whole mushroom, Apple Cider Vinegar is added in our process. This allows vitamins and minerals to be included in the final product, water and alcohol do not pull these nutrients effectively.
By recognizing something was missing I was able to recover maintaining the rich color from a proper extraction process and make my customers happy by providing an extract that tastes amazing!
